Grameen America is a nonprofit microfinance institution headquartered in New York. Our mission is to alleviate poverty through entrepreneurship by offering loans, savings programs, credit establishment, and financial services to low-income families and individuals in the U.S. Founded in 2008 by Nobel Peace Prize recipient Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Grameen America is modeled after the success of Grameen Bank in Bangladesh and its pioneering work in poverty alleviation and establishing “credit as a human right”.
Grameen America launched its first branch office in Queens, New York in January 2008 and has since expanded our services across New York City and in Indianapolis (IN), Omaha (NE) and the San Francisco Bay Area (CA). Since its inception, Grameen America has disbursed over $50 million in micro-loans to more than 11,500 members in the United States who live below the poverty line.
Since 2008, Grameen America has demonstrated that the Grameen peer group lending model is just as successful in the United States as it has been in the developing world. Grameen America’s primary goal is to build a large-scale, successful, and sustainable microfinance program in the United States.
