Inner-City Arts is widely regarded as one of the nation’s most effective arts education providers. It is an oasis of learning, achievement and creativity in the heart of Skid Row, and a vital partner in the work of creating a safer, healthier Los Angeles. Since it was founded in 1989, Inner-City Arts has brought life-changing opportunities to more than 150,000 children living in the city’s poorest neighborhoods, and provided professional support to nearly 5,000 teachers and community partners.
The mission of Inner-City Arts is to “use arts education to positively affect the lives of inner-city children, improving their chances to lead constructive and successful lives by developing creativity, improving learning skills and building self-confidence.” Through a landmark partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District, and local charter and parochial schools, Inner-City Arts provides the only arts instruction many students will receive during the school day. The growing after school program engages K-8 students in the visual and performing arts, while providing intervention and prevention during the critical afternoon hours. On weekends, opportunities for focused, long-term study encourage middle and high school students to engage in in-depth arts learning, and to pursue higher education.
