The Career “Day Trader”– A New Form For Financial Success, No Matter What Your Expertise!
Some of my clients who are in transition have not found a “single position” that sustains them financially or intellectually. Indeed, for some of my clients that “single” position does not exist any longer.
So, a few of my successful clients have created a new kind of career for themselves. They are a “day trader” of their career skills. Each day they put their resources against a new employer. They curate and cultivate employers. They use that community of employers to create the income stream they need and to fertilize and re-fertilize their knowledge base.
This kind of career is not for the faint of heart. Like Day Trading in the traditional financial field it is not “secure.” But then again it does not have the constraints of a “secure” job. You don’t have to work 7 to 7. You may “work” (getting paid) only 10 hours a week. The rest of the week is time for you to fill becoming more “known,” and marketing your skills.
It is by definition very fluid– you learn, market your expertise, earn as a result of your expertise.
The kind of person who can thrive in this kind of career is self confident, accepting of risk, and eager to continue learning.
Will they “day trade” forever. Probably not. Perhaps they will day trade into a single position with a single employer.
But this kind of person is committed to doing excellent work (employers won’t pay for anything else!), doing work in an environment where their expertise is recognized, and continually learning and super connecting. (See earlier blog!)
Are you the right person to be a career day trader?
